âItâs your turn,â Jaden said, breaking the silence.
âMy turn?â
âI told you all about me.â
Cale laughed. âYou did. I suppose it is my turn. Not that I have much to tell, Iâm afraid. Maple Ridge born and raised. My brother and I were brought up knowing our roles. Heâs taking over here and Iâm starting a new pack⦠not much else to tell.â
âThat is pretty boring,â Jaden said, flashing a grin to show he was kidding.
âIn fairness, I suppose it was rather intense. Thereâs a lot of pressure knowing what youâre expected to do when you grow up. And we did all sorts of training and shadowing around the territory to learn how to run a pack. I used to envy Conner, not because he gets to take over here, like a lot of people assume Iâd envy him for, but because I have so many other logistical things to deal with.â He sighed. âI guess itâs my turn to explain why I donât want a true mateâ¦â
âOnly if you want.â
âWell, if anyone deserves to know, itâs you.â Cale thought for a moment before speaking. âMy father is⦠I suppose heâs the sort of omega that you donât want to be. My mother was largely the one responsible for teaching me about running the pack; he just took care of us domestically. He works in the rotation around the territory â everyone does â but heâs never bothered to cultivate a skill. He works the minimum hours we require and then takes care of the house and the family. But heâs never really adapted to the hectic schedule of an alpha pack leader, and my mother hasnât really slowed down for him. Although sheâs starting to.â
âWhat do you mean?â Jaden asked.
âFor example, my dad cooks us all dinner, right?â
âTypical domestic omega,â Jaden said, hoping it wouldnât come across as offensive.
âExactly. Only, something pack-related comes up and my mother never shows. Sure, she calls to tell us sheâll be late⦠but I can see my fatherâs disappointment as he bags up her leftovers for her. They hardly ever get to see each other. And when she does get home all they have to talk about is his day cleaning the house and her day dealing with mostly tedious pack stuff. Now, they are true mates, mind you. I know theyâre still very much in love and happy with each other. But, they just seem to live two different lives. And I donât want that for me. I donât want a true mate I never see and, at least for the near future, thatâs how it will be setting up a new pack. I donât want to know that my mate is waiting at home with a hot meal that I wonât share or staying up to wait for me, only to fall asleep on the couch when I get stuck working late⦠â
Jaden nodding in understanding.
âAnd my mom really didnât spend much time with us until she started teaching us the alpha ropes.
